For children with a significant hearing loss, cochlear implants may be the best solution for your child to hear all the sounds of speech needed to optimally develop their speech and language.
The team at Little Ears & Little Speech understand the complexities associated with managing a child with significant hearing loss. We are an established specialist practice located in Dulwich, with visiting sites at Salisbury and Western Community Hospital (Henley Beach). We provide comprehensive audiology assessments and management of hearing loss for children and adults. This includes our implantable hearing technology program (i.e. cochlear implants and other implantable devices) when hearing aids are no longer enough. We pride ourselves on our ability to provide truly client and family centred care.
The Audiology Implant Team at Little Ears has extensive experience in implantable hearing technology. This includes experience from the Princess Margaret Hospital for Children (Perth), Flinders Medical Centre (Adelaide), The Women’s and Children’s Hospital (Adelaide) and the Sydney Cochlear Implant Centre (Sydney). You can be assured that your child and family are in good hands. Between us we have over 50+ years’ experience and pride ourselves on using the latest research and technology advancements.
The Speech Pathology Team at Little Speech are passionate about working with children and their families to help optimise communication outcomes. The team monitor your child’s speech and language to assess whether they are meeting age appropriate developmental milestones. Any areas of concern are identified early with strategies implemented to support and develop communication. Attention is always given to how this can best be achieved within your family’s individual circumstances. Parents/carers are the agents of change, and by joining in on therapy sessions you gain a much stronger understanding of how to implement strategies in your daily life. We also believe it is important to train and support other staff involved in your child’s care.
Little Ears & Little Speech together provide a comprehensive assessment and management team for your child and family.
Comprehensive Pre-operative Audiology and Speech Pathology Assessments
To evaluate your child’s progress with conventional hearing aids in their listening and speech and language development. These appointments will either be bulk-billed under Medicare or covered within your NDIS plan. The team will liaise with your referring ENT Specialist and audiologist at Australian Hearing to obtain an accurate hearing/communication profile of your child. This will assist in determining the best hearing device for your child (i.e. remaining with conventional hearing aid(s), or proceeding with one or two cochlear implants).
Post-Operative Programming and Managament (Audiology & Speech Pathology)
The audiology team, together with your ENT Specialist, will guide you and your family through the implantation process. This will include the initial switch-on of your child’s device and their long-term hearing management.
The speech pathology team will monitor your child’s speech and language development throughout this process. An intensive habilitation program will be tailored for your child with listening and communication goals developed and consistently reviewed.
Children with Cochlear Implants Transferring from other Services
If your child already has a cochlear implant and you would like to transfer to services provided by the Little Ears and/or Little Speech we will liaise with your current implant audiologist to ensure we have a detailed history of your child’s progress and development. We can arrange transfer of your child’s implant file at this time prior to you attending your first appointment with us. We will review your child’s listening and communication goals and where required assist you in applying for additional supports under the NDIS.
Troubleshooting, facilitating repairs, issuing loan devices and applying for upgrades for eligible clients (these services are typically covered under Australian Hearing; however we are able to facilitate this on your behalf).
Children with permanent hearing loss are eligible for services under the National Disability Insurance Scheme. Funding under this scheme is provided to support your child to develop and improve functional capacity in everyday life (i.e. speech and language development, communication options and social and emotional development). Level of funding depends on your child’s individual circumstance.
Access to this program is commonly facilitated via the Australian Government Hearing Services Program, Australian Hearing. Your Australian Hearing Audiologist can provide management of your child’s hearing loss with conventional hearing aids and listening devices essentially free of charge. For children with significant hearing loss conventional hearing aids may be unable to achieve optimal hearing with referral warranted for consideration of an implantable hearing device (cochlear implant).
Together the Little Ears & Little Speech Paediatric Cochlear Implant team and your Australian Hearing Audiologist aim to empower you to make an informed decision about long term hearing management for your child.
