Little Ears & Little Speech
Paediatric Cochlear Implant Program

For children with a significant hearing loss, cochlear implants may be the best solution for your child to hear all the sounds of speech needed to optimally develop their speech and language.

Why Choose Little Ears & Little Speech?

The team at Little Ears & Little Speech understand the complexities associated with managing a child with significant hearing loss. We are an established specialist practice located in Dulwich, with visiting sites at Salisbury and Western Community Hospital (Henley Beach). We provide comprehensive audiology assessments and management of hearing loss for children and adults. This includes our implantable hearing technology program (i.e. cochlear implants and other implantable devices) when hearing aids are no longer enough. We pride ourselves on our ability to provide truly client and family centred care.

Experienced and Dedicated Staff

The Audiology Implant Team at Little Ears has extensive experience in implantable hearing technology. This includes experience from the Princess Margaret Hospital for Children (Perth), Flinders Medical Centre (Adelaide), The Women’s and Children’s Hospital (Adelaide) and the Sydney Cochlear Implant Centre (Sydney). You can be assured that your child and family are in good hands. Between us we have over 50+ years’ experience and pride ourselves on using the latest research and technology advancements.

The Speech Pathology Team at Little Speech are passionate about working with children and their families to help optimise communication outcomes. The team monitor your child’s speech and language to assess whether they are meeting age appropriate developmental milestones. Any areas of concern are identified early with strategies implemented to support and develop communication. Attention is always given to how this can best be achieved within your family’s individual circumstances. Parents/carers are the agents of change, and by joining in on therapy sessions you gain a much stronger understanding of how to implement strategies in your daily life. We also believe it is important to train and support other staff involved in your child’s care.

Little Ears & Little Speech together provide a comprehensive assessment and management team for your child and family.

Services Offered:

  • Comprehensive Pre-operative Audiology and Speech Pathology Assessments

To evaluate your child’s progress with conventional hearing aids in their listening and speech and language development. These appointments will either be bulk-billed under Medicare or covered within your NDIS plan. The team will liaise with your referring ENT Specialist and audiologist at Australian Hearing to obtain an accurate hearing/communication profile of your child. This will assist in determining the best hearing device for your child (i.e. remaining with conventional hearing aid(s), or proceeding with one or two cochlear implants).

  • Post-Operative Programming and Managament (Audiology & Speech Pathology)

The audiology team, together with your ENT Specialist, will guide you and your family through the implantation process. This will include the initial switch-on of your child’s device and their long-term hearing management.

The speech pathology team will monitor your child’s speech and language development throughout this process. An intensive habilitation program will be tailored for your child with listening and communication goals developed and consistently reviewed.

  • Children with Cochlear Implants Transferring from other Services

If your child already has a cochlear implant and you would like to transfer to services provided by the Little Ears and/or Little Speech we will liaise with your current implant audiologist to ensure we have a detailed history of your child’s progress and development. We can arrange transfer of your child’s implant file at this time prior to you attending your first appointment with us. We will review your child’s listening and communication goals and where required assist you in applying for additional supports under the NDIS.

  • Equipment Management

Troubleshooting, facilitating repairs, issuing loan devices and applying for upgrades for eligible clients (these services are typically covered under Australian Hearing; however we are able to facilitate this on your behalf).

What is the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS)?

Children with permanent hearing loss are eligible for services under the National Disability Insurance Scheme. Funding under this scheme is provided to support your child to develop and improve functional capacity in everyday life (i.e. speech and language development, communication options and social and emotional development). Level of funding depends on your child’s individual circumstance.

Access to this program is commonly facilitated via the Australian Government Hearing Services Program, Australian Hearing. Your Australian Hearing Audiologist can provide management of your child’s hearing loss with conventional hearing aids and listening devices essentially free of charge. For children with significant hearing loss conventional hearing aids may be unable to achieve optimal hearing with referral warranted for consideration of an implantable hearing device (cochlear implant).

Together the Little Ears & Little Speech Paediatric Cochlear Implant team and your Australian Hearing Audiologist aim to empower you to make an informed decision about long term hearing management for your child.

COVID-19 Update

At All Ears & Speech our priority is to ensure the health and well-being of our team and valued clients. We understand the significant impact the Coronavirus is having on everyone and that this is one of the biggest challenges we have all faced. We are in this together and our thoughts and best wishes are with you and your families during this time.

Whilst our practice activities have slowed significantly, our team remains able to assist you with your hearing and speech healthcare. We have reduced our clinical hours, further strengthened our already exemplary hygiene practices and our Speech Pathologists are now primarily providing services online using TeleHealth.

From the 1st April 2020, we have put the following additional safeguards in place to ensure everyone’s well-being and that our business can continue to look after you and your family.

  • Our administration team will work remotely during the day and attend clinic outside normal clinic hours. This is to minimise contact between clinicians, clients and our admin team. Should at any stage someone be exposed to Coronavirus our risk of transmitting the infection to others is significantly reduced. Kindly leave a message on our answering machine and rest assured we will return your call as soon as possible

  • For NEW CLIENTS – we are here to help and answer any questions you may have regarding your hearing, your child’s hearing or your child’s speech and language development. We can offer initial consults over the phone or via TeleHealth (videoconferencing) to assist. We can then determine whether we need to see you in person urgently or whether we can provide you with services via TeleHealth or other resources to help you in the interim. Again, please leave a message on our answering machine or email us on and we will get back to you asap.

  • For clients with URGENT REFERRALS from Ear, Nose and Throat Specialists or other medical practitioners we will see you should you pass our COVID19 questionnaire. As per government regulations we will not see anyone who has:

    1. travelled interstate or overseas without self-isolating for 14 days

    2. anyone unwell (fever, sore throat, respiratory difficulties)

    3. anyone who has been in contact with someone who has travelled or who may have been exposed to COVID19

We will be offering complimentary online resources and short videos to improve children’s listening, learning, speech and language development during this time.

For our adult clients we will be providing auditory training resources to make the most of your devices, and lots of information about hearing loss and the various technologies available. Our team are excited to be updating and sharing these resources with you. As always, any feedback, or suggestions on topics that you would like covered will be warmly received.

I would like to take the opportunity to thank all our clients for your emails, phone calls and supportive comments during this time. These have been so encouraging and brightened our day. Our clients will continue to remain our priority and we can not thank you enough for choosing us as your service provider.

On behalf of the team at All Ears & Speech please stay safe and healthy.
